The Importance of  Intolerance Testing

Given that horses, like humans, have a nervous system and the food they consume can have either a positive or negative effect on their brain and nervous system, it makes sense to conduct a food intolerance test for them. Since horses cannot communicate their discomfort, it is even more important to check for foods that may cause problems, especially for performance horses who have a limited diet. Just as with humans, certain foods can cause health problems or headaches in horses, and consuming foods that their body cannot handle can negatively impact their energy levels and overall performance. Additionally, problematic foods can cause mood swings in horses, just like in humans.

By using advanced analysis methods, we can determine which foods your horse's body can tolerate and which it cannot. After making adjustments to their diet, you may see significant improvements in their nature, including increased speed, concentration, and stamina, within a few weeks.

Take Control of your Horse's Health

With our Equiscan Report, you can take positive steps towards understanding your horses health better. Scan results may reveal foods or ingredients that you wish to eliminate under the guidance of a suitable adviser. Choose from our packages above to suit your needs and budget.

How Can Food Intolerance affect my horses health?

Digestive Disturbances

When a horse consumes food to which they are intolerant, it can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, or colic. These disturbances can affect nutrient absorption, and disrupt the balance of their gastrointestinal system.

Inflammation & Immune Response

Food intolerance can trigger an inflammatory response in the horse's body. Chronic inflammation not only affects the digestive system but can also manifest in other areas, leading to joint stiffness, skin irritations, respiratory problems, and weakened immune function.

Reduced Performance

Horses with undiagnosed food intolerances may experience a decline in performance. The intake of intolerant foods can drain their energy levels, affect concentration, and diminish stamina. This can impact their ability to excel in training, competitions, or other equine activities.

Weight Fluctuations

Food intolerance can disrupt the horse's metabolism and contribute to weight fluctuations. Some intolerant foods may cause weight gain due to inflammation and impaired digestion, while others may lead to weight loss due to malabsorption of nutrients.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Food intolerances can limit the horse's ability to receive necessary nutrients. Certain foods they cannot tolerate may be sources of essential vitamins, minerals, or proteins. Over time, these deficiencies can compromise their overall health, impair growth and development, and weaken their immune system.

Behavioural Changes

Intolerant foods can influence a horse's behavior, causing mood swings, irritability, or nervousness. These changes can affect their ability to focus, respond to cues, and maintain a calm temperament, impacting their training and handling.

Hoof Health

Intolerances can contribute to hoof problems such as laminitis, abscesses, or weak hoof growth. The inflammatory response triggered by intolerant foods can impact the blood flow and nutrient supply to the hooves, compromising their strength and integrity.

Skin & Coat Issues

Food intolerances can manifest externally through skin and coat problems. Horses may experience itchiness, hives, rashes, or a dull, unhealthy coat. These issues can be signs of an underlying intolerance and may require dietary adjustments for resolution.

What to do with your Results

The results from your report will highlight the types of allergens and substances that your horse is intolerant to. This will help you identify trigger foods, ingredients and / or environmental items. To treat your horses intolerances, most of the time, you simply need to change their diet by removing the trigger items from their food plan. In some cases, intolerances may also require treatment or supplementation. The report can be shown to your Vet or Health Adviser and a suitable plan of action can be developed.
